Passo Tonale is the most popular destination in Italy for learning to ski. There are 10 lifts at village level, accessing lots of short blue runs and a few longer reds higher up. Under careful tuition over 100 instructors, within a few days beginners will be ready to progress across the valley to the glacier, or down to Ponte di Legno's steeper slopes.
Intermediates can take the covered and fast 4-seater chairlift to Cima Bleis to be rewarded with a 4.5 km run with spectacular scenery. Head up the Valbiolo valley on the other side of Tonale and climb higher again to the more challenging Contrabandieri run for views across the whole valley. An area lift pass gives access to plenty more piste at Marilleva or Madonna di Campiglio, which are linked by ski bus.
There are some fast runs in Passo Tonale if you know where to look. Just down from the hotel of the same name, the Paradiso cable car rises to 2,585m, with a fun black run back down, or great off-piste options if you continue on up to the glacier - some of which are best accessed with a local guide. Down in Ponte di Legno there are some great blacks through the trees, which are handy when it's snowing.
With a variety of slopes graded from blue to black, the Presena Glacier offers skiing at over 3,000m, ensuring snow cover for the resort's early and late season dates. Its groomed runs aren't too challenging, but the top station gives access to some adventurous off-piste options over the back. One of the longest pistes in Europe - at 11km - drops 2,000m in altitude through stunning snowfields to the wooded slopes of Ponte di Legno. The new eight-person cable car gives access to two mountain refuges, with great food and drink on offer.
Rack up your mileage with a Ski Away-day to Madonna di Campiglio. Around a 1-hour bus ride away from Passo Tonale, you’ll get to witness the impressively jagged Brenta Dolomites while you try out runs perfect for all abilities. Challenge yourself on the Schumacher black run (named in honour of the famous Formula 1 driver) and explore 90km of off-piste snow. With your area lift pass, you get one free day to let loose on these fabulous slopes to cruise and carve to your heart’s content.
Local transport fee applicable. Speak to your rep for more details.
The Presena glacier - a monstrous 3,000m high glacier - hoards most of the off-piste skiing in Passo Tonale, though, if tree skiing is your thing, then the bowl near Bocchetta Blies opens up a channel through a steep, pine-lined forest.
