The gentle nursery slopes at Angertal provide an ideal introduction for beginners staying in Bad Hofgastein. From there, beginners can progress on to the blue runs on the Schlossalm or Stubnerkogel.
This is ski-your-heart-out country. Bad Hofgastein offers a wide variety of red and blue runs, linked together with nearby Bad Gastein to make one large area. The Gastein valley has a further three ski areas, offering total of 250 km of well groomed, often quiet, pistes. Buses and trains link the areas, and are covered by your lift pass.
There are some testing runs on the Stubnerkogel and a couple of nice blacks on the Graukogel. The off-piste can be fantastic too - hire a guide and take the spectacular off-piste route from Kreuzkogel to Heilstollen, or sign up for an off-piste safari or touring day with the ski school.
Rack up your mileage with Ski Away-days to either Alpendorf and Flachau or Maria Alm and Dienten. Each are around a 40-minute bus ride from Bad Hofgastein, meaning you’ll get to experience some of the fantastic skiing in the Ski Amadé resorts that aren’t easily accessible on public transport, try out some epic off-piste in Maria Alm and mess about in the Betterpark Alpendorf in no time. With your local lift pass, you get 1 free day to slide, carve or freestyle to your heart’s content in any of these resorts. Speak to your rep for more details.
The magical countryside of the Gastein Valley and the resorts of Bad Hofgastein and Bad Gastein offer an array of trails for all different levels. The Sportgastein area is perfect for high-altitude trails, while the floodlit trails in both Bad Gastein-Bockstein and inside the Kurpark of Bad Hofgastein mean you can keep exploring long after the sun goes down.
Wanting to see parts of the mountain the piste basher won't let you? Hire a guide and take the spectacular off-piste route from Kreuzkogel to Heilstöllen, or venture into the backcountry near the Sportgastein, with elevations of up to 2,700m. If you're a bit apprehensive, then the best way to experience the untouched snow is to follow H1 and H2 down to the very bottom and let loose in the powder, knowing that the safety of the piste isn't too far away - and it's a very open area, meaning there won't be any trees to crash into.
