Ski resorts set the bar high on New Year’s Eve. With huge celebrations, torchlight descents and weird and wonderful traditions to choose from, where should you head this New Year’s Eve?
Pas de la Casa, Andorra
Choose Pas de la Casa for New Year and you’ll be partying all week. Locals and visitors alike flock to places like Paddy’s Irish Bar and Underground – which buzz with atmosphere right through until 5am. As the clock strikes midnight on December 31, join in the local tradition of eating a grape for every chime of the bells. Meant to symbolise good health and prosperity for the months to come, can you finish all twelve before the final chime?
The Pop-Rock festival in Tignes is the largest free outdoor party in Europe. Fans of pop and rock music can bust some moves on Europe’s highest dancefloor – the Snowfront in Tignes Le Lac. And at the stroke of midnight, the mountains explode with colour as fireworks light up the night sky.
The day before New Year’s Eve is as big as 31 December here. Torchlight descents by the ski instructors, and lights and lasers on the face of the Matterhorn are topped off with a brilliant fireworks display. And to keep you warm, there’s free mulled wine and extra-chocolatey hot chocolate. Then on the night itself, Cervinia goes all out with a massive street party, with DJs, dancing and streamers galore.
End the year on a high in Whistler. The whole family will love the concerts, games and amazing Fire & Ice Show – watch Whistler’s top skiers and riders spin, flip and twist through a burning hoop. And as the clock strikes midnight, get ready to ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’ at the spectacular fireworks display.
St Anton, Austria
It wouldn’t be New Year’s Eve in St Anton if you didn’t kick things off with an afternoon of music and dancing at the slopeside Krazy Kangaruh or Mooserwirt. Back down in town, New Year’s is a party-in-the-streets affair. Make your way through the pedestrianised centre for one of the noisiest countdowns you’ve ever seen (and heard), with fireworks going off in every direction.
Join the parties on the piste this winter and start planning your New Year’s getaway.
