If you can’t wait to get skiing this winter but haven’t got a full week free, how about a short ski break to Switzerland? Spend a few days on the Swiss slopes and wander around the chocolate-box village of Wengen.
HOW DO SHORT SKI BREAKS WORK?
Book a short break with Crystal and head to the slopes for three or four days’ skiing. You can fly direct to Geneva, and our team will meet you at the airport to help you get on your way to Wengen. Transfers in Switzerland are by train, with three to four changes depending on the schedule – so sit back and enjoy the wintery scenery from the comfort of your carriage.
WHAT’S WENGEN LIKE?
Overlooking the Lauterbrunnen valley, Wengen is a typical Swiss mountain village with a laid-back feel and heaps of character. The traditional cog railway chugs its way up from the valley below, stops off at Wengen’s car-free centre and then carries on up into the ski area.
Just like the village, the skiing is anything but average. Wengen and neighbouring Grindelwald make up the Jungfrau ski area, which has 210km of varied pistes. There are gentle nursery slopes used by the excellent ski schools, as well as runs for experts on the Kleine Scheidegg mountain. And if you’re looking for a challenge, take on the famous Lauberhorn World Cup downhill piste, which is used in the annual races in January. Off the slopes, there are plenty of things to do, like day trips to Interlaken, ziplining and a visit to the Jungfraujoch − Europe’s highest railway station at 3,454m.
WHERE TO STAY
Wengen has lots of half-board hotels that are great value for money compared to other Swiss resorts.
In a quieter part of Wengen, this 3-star hotel is just 5 minutes’ walk from the Männlichen cable car, and 3 minutes from the village centre. There’s a small bar and a cosy lounge to relax in, with armchairs and a roaring open fireplace. Or step out onto the terrace for views over the Lauterbrunnen valley, towards the town of Mürren and the Jungfrau peaks. And when it comes to the food, you can fill up from a hot and cold buffet each morning and, in the evenings, tuck into four courses of regional and international fare in the sophisticated dining room.
Part of the Our Finest range, the 4-star Silberhorn is a welcoming hotel with stylish décor and first-class wellness facilities – the whirlpool even has panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Enjoy the afternoon tea before relaxing next to the open fire in the lounge or grabbing an after-ski drink at the bar. And as for the rooms, they’re big and many of them are south-facing with views of the Lauterbrunnen valley. The hotel’s located in the centre of the village, so the shops and restaurants are right on your doorstep, and you’re just a few minutes’ walk from the train station and lifts.
Hotel Wengener Hof
This traditional, 4-star hotel is 5 minutes’ walk from the resort centre and the Männlichen cable car. The food’s something to shout about here – 5-course evening meals and a 6-course weekly gala dinner are served in the hotel’s elegant restaurant. And you can pair your meal with one of the 3,000 bottles in the wine cellar. When you want to relax, you can use the spa at the sister Hotel Silberhorn, a 5-minute walk away. And you’ve got a range of rooms to choose from, many of them with seating areas and south-facing balconies.
