Ski travel insurance – don’t hit the slopes without it

Mum with kids on the slopes

There’s usually something that UK travellers manage to avoid or forget about when going overseas. From travel adapters to passports, we’ve all been in that mad panic at the airport or after having arrived at our destination. But whatever you forget on your travels this winter, do not let it be snow sports insurance.

Staggering statistics have been revealed regarding the numbers of UK skiers who take to the slopes without the appropriate cover. Ask yourself: do you know what your insurance covers? Or what it will cost if you break your arm on the slopes in France? Or even what an EHIC card will do to help given an accident? This post covers it all.
The statistics come from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office which this week revealed that almost a third (31%) of people in the UK admit to not taking out travel insurance for their winter sports holidays.

What’s perhaps more worrying is how many people thought they were insured but didn’t have appropriate cover. The research identified that 61% of those surveyed were unaware that many travel insurance policies do not cover accidents that occur off-piste and only 16% said that they always read the small print.

And this doesn’t account for skiers and boarders who think their general travel insurance covers snow sports.

It almost always doesn’t.

The survey also highlights the confusion over the European Health Insurance Cards (EHICs). The report says that only 53% of those surveyed understand what cover an EHIC provides.

For example; many people wrongly believe that the card covers a helicopter ambulance, medical repatriation and transport off the slope with a ski patrol and 34% of those surveyed said they didn’t know what it covered.

Below is the new FCO ski world map which identifies associated costs for when things go wrong whilst on the slopes.
