Two Crystal Ski customers who travelled out to Pas de la Casa with the company for New Year give a review of their holiday.
Jamie, a snowboarder and Helen, a skier hit the slopes and the famous après ski hard, and here’s their story….
A sleepless night around Christmas can usually only mean one thing….Santa! In our case our sleepless 3 hours came on Christmas night, after Santa had been. My snowboard and Helen’s ski’s was packed in the car and this could only mean one thing – Bring on Pas De La Casa and the Grandvalira ski resort with Crystal Ski!
With our flight being at 6am Boxing Day and it only being a 1 hr 25 min flight to Toulouse we were on the transfer to Andorra in no time.
Accommodation in Pas de la Casa
When we arrived in resort it was an efficient check-in to our hotel, Hotel de les Pistes , followed by our welcome meeting where we got our precious area lift pass and met our Crystal rep Jamie (aka Ron from Harry Potter) who was able to help out with some useful info and was on hand the whole holiday for anything we needed.
The hotel was exclusive to Crystal and helped by a new refurb was very fresh, clean and warm. Its location was unrivalled in Pas – being literally on the piste. We had a ‘mountain view’ room which, as promised, gave a breathtaking view of the piste and the mountain. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Breakfast was served in the hotel and you’re on half board, like we were, your evening meal could be found in a local restaurant 2 minutes walk away. We both love our food and could not fault the grub on offer. I generally ate mine and then helped Helen finish hers off every night – which the waiter found quite amusing.
Grandvalira ski area
With 205km of piste to explore we were spoilt for choice. The first day on the piste we explored the local slopes of Pas De La Casa before heading over to Grau Roig and on past Llac Del Cubil. The next 5 days were spent checking out other local resorts of Soldeu, El Tarter and all the little mountain spots in between.
The Grandvalira resort has a good mix of red and blues but there are also some fun blacks which I liked throwing my board down. The surrounding mountain views are beautiful and there’s also a number of tree runs to wind through. The off piste parts are very easy to access and fun to play in; it’s just a shame there was not more powder on our trip to make full use of them. Although snow was a touch short whilst we were there, the resort is covered in snow cannons. These were on all day and night when cold enough and meant virtually all the runs were open throughout our stay.
A local service provided by the ski resort worth noting were the on piste pro photographers. They would catch you flying down the mountain and then in the local info centre you could create an account and save your favourite pics before choosing to buy them. Check out the 2 of us!
Après ski in Pas de la Casa
Pas De La Casa is a lively place so perfect for those looking for Après. Excellent happy hours and with a wristband from the reps for €5 you can get a pint of beer for as cheap as €1 which we made full use of. Although lively those not up for partying every night can find places to chill out after a long day on the slopes in the form of restaurants and bars.
Crystal organise brilliant après events every night from quizzes to pub crawls.
The one we got involved on was the ‘Rib Shack’. With a one off payment of €23 a person you were treated to a 3 course American style rib feast (ribs, chicken wings, kebabs, jacket potatoes, coleslaw and apple crumble), all you can drink beer and wine, a live band and a pucker atmosphere as you will see from our pics. I randomly discovered during the evening that apple crumble and coleslaw go surprisingly well together – who’d have thought it!
All in all a great trip. Bring on the next trip in March with Crystal….the only question is where shall we go this time?
