First-time skiers are well looked after in the Portes du Soleil area. Avoriaz has perfect nursery slopes next to the resort which, while small compared to the size of the resort, are sunny, good for snow, and link well to longer gentle runs.
The Portes du Soleil is a fantastic area for intermediates - there are 240km of blue and red trails in Avoriaz and Morzine alone. The skiing starts on your doorstep and, for those who want to venture further, there is the entire Portes du Soleil circuit through Châtel, Morgins and Champéry to explore.
The Portes du Soleil area has some of the most challenging skiing in France, with over 20 black runs, some of the biggest moguls in the world on The Wall at Avoriaz, endless off-piste possibilities, and the hair-raising World Cup Downhill from the top of Les Hauts Forts.
Avoriaz has access to four amazing cross-country area including the Manche Valley, with mainly challenging circuits, the Parc Naturel des Crêtes de Zorre with tracks for all abilities, and Lake Montriond and Pleney-Chavannes with lots of pretty forest runs. All the trails are free to use and many have double tracks to cater for both classic and skating styles.
As a member of the Portes du Soleil, Avoriaz has plenty of great places for a bit of off-piste skiing. From the side of the piste to the backcountry, there's so much to explore. Above Ardent you'll find wide open powder fields, while in Crosets there are lots of shoots and couloirs. The snowcross zones also remain unpisted, but are secure areas so you can enjoy the freedom of off-piste with the safety of a normal run. One of these is the Canyon du Pschott snowzone - it's got multiple canyons, natural half pipes, cliff drops and immense kickers. If you're an off-piste beginner, the best place to get started are between the trees in Super Morzine.
Avoriaz, said to be the snowboarding capital of Europe, has very few drag lifts and was even one of the first ski areas to open a snowboard-only section. Beginners will find lots of wide, gentle runs and intermediates and experts will have full access to excellent terrain: cliff drops, powder bowls and snowcross runs. Alongside the five terrain parks in Avoriaz alone - there are 11 in total in the Portes du Soleil - the resort is home to The Stash, a board park thought up by Jake Burton and built using only natural materials. The park, accessed using the Prolays chairlift, is un-groomed and includes hidden wooden obstacles all around the circuits.
