A haven for beginner skiers, Pyhä is known for its wide, confidence-building blue runs and great ski school. If you’ve never strapped on skis before, then this is a great place to learn. More advanced skiers will appreciate the deep, powdery snow and can test their skills on some of the best runs in Finland – including the Huttu-Ukko, which is used by the national ski team for race training. Plus, there are miles of off-piste and cross-country trails just begging to be explored.
Families love Pyhä and it’s easy to see why – there are slopes designed especially for families, as well as the Junior Park where the kids can practise jumps and tricks.
Away from the slopes, there’s a wish list full of winter activities to do. Drive a team of huskies through snow-covered forests, race snowmobiles across the frozen tundra or snuggle up in the back of a reindeer-pulled sleigh. And of course, a visit to Santa’s secret cottage is guaranteed to make any child’s Christmas.
Pyhä itself is a small village so you can get a real taste for the traditions and culture of Lapland. Mealtimes are always a treat, with everything from pizza to reindeer on offer. The après is pretty low-key – though there are several bars that offer live music and great drinks if you like things a bit louder. After a day on the mountain, what better way to relax that by heading back to your own cosy cabin in the woods and warming up in the sauna or in front of the log fire. If you prefer less rustic accommodation, the Hotel Pyhätunturi has all the modern comforts.
All holidays here include 6-day lift passes for the whole party in the price of the package, so it's even easier to get out on the slopes.
