Passo Tonale is the most popular destination in Italy for learning to ski. With six lifts for beginners at village level, progress for first timers is normally fast and satisfying. Under careful tuition from the excellent English-speaking instructors, in a few days you'll be up on the higher slopes where you'll find lots of really long, gentle, easy runs on which to hone your new-found skills.
Intermediates can take the covered and fast 4-seater chairlift to Cima Bleis to be rewarded with a long 4.5 km run in spectacular scenery. Head up the Valbiolo valley on the other side of Tonale and climb higher again to the more challenging Contrabandieri run with views across the whole valley. With an area lift pass, you can also enjoy the skiing at Marilleva or Madonna di Campiglio, linked by ski bus.
There are some fast runs in Passo Tonale. On the south side of the village the Paradiso cable car rises to 2,585m and from here there is a knee trembling black run under the cable car. From the top of the glacier there are some great off-piste routes that a local guide will be able to show you, or further down in Ponte di Legno there are some great blacks through the trees.
With a variety of slopes graded from blue to black, the Presena Glacier offers overs 100km of piste and some of the best off-piste in the Alps. The groomed runs themselves are short and not terribly steep, but are challenging all the same. There's a snowpark for freestylers and a range of mountain refuges to stop for some food, too.
Rack up your mileage with a Ski Away-day to Madonna di Campiglio. Around a 1-hour bus ride away from Passo Tonale, you’ll get to try out the gorgeous Brenta Dolomites runs, that are perfect for all abilities, challenge yourself on the Schumacher black run (named in honour of Michael Schumacher) and explore 90km of untouched off-piste snow. With your Area lift pass, you get 1 free day to let loose on these fabulous slopes to cruise, carve or freestyle to your heart’s content. Local transport fee applicable.
