So what's it like?
Abundance of snow for skiing and Arctic activities
At the World Ski Awards 2013, Ruka was voted Finland’s Best Ski Resort. With the largest beginner area in the country and the huge selection of activities to do, it’s perfect for families. The slopes are quiet - even late in the afternoon you can take your pick of freshly-groomed runs. And the lifts stay open late, meaning you don’t have to take a day off from skiing if you want to try other activities.
At the base of the main slopes is car-free Ruka Village where you’ll find bars, restaurants and good quality hotels. Just outside the village centre are traditional log cabins, with wood fires and private saunas.
For the more adventurous skier or snowboarder, there are three parks, a superpipe and a freestyle centre - used for the Freestyle World Championships in 2005. When you need a break, head to one of the wooden huts around the slopes and warm up in front of an open fire.
As well as the skiing, most people visit Ruka for the additional activities - you can take your pick from a long list. Finland is the home of Santa and a visit to his secret cottage is a must. Other popular activities include dog sledding, snowmobiling and reindeer sleigh rides. All the activities start in the village centre and you get your thermal suits and boots thrown in. There are activity packs that include a selection of our most popular activities, or you can mix and match to create your perfect holiday.

Ruka has the largest dedicated beginner ski area in Finland and the quiet slopes make it ideal for learners. The Rosa and Rudolf snow park in Vuosseli has three magic carpets and is great fun for children and adults. Book a first time ski or board package and the instructors, who speak excellent English, should have you skiing most of the runs by the end of the week.
All ski/board tuition takes place in the morning, allowing you to enjoy one of the many activities on offer in the afternoons.
Grooming is excellent in Ruka and the resort is ideal for intermediate skiers looking to improve their technique. There are no lift queues and plenty of tree lined runs to ski. You will particularly enjoy the challenges of the red runs on the western side of the mountain.
Expert skiers will enjoy the steeper red slopes and black runs on the north and western side of the mountain. There's also a freestyle area, mogul field and some exciting off-piste through the trees. The men's World Cup for Freestyle skiing was held in Ruka in December 2010.
There's a number of bars and restaurants in the centre of Ruka. Weekends are particularly busy and there's plenty of music. For après ski drinks try the Colorado Bar, which has comfy sofas and a pool table or blast out some of your favourite tunes in the karaoke bar in the Hotel Rukahovi.
