miles of piste, extensive off-piste and wonderfully relaxing spas
The extensive Gasteinertal ski area is one of the largest in Austria. The attractive town of Bad Hofgastein has a bustling centre and excellent amenities, not to mention the famous spas (see 'Ski & Spa'). Bad Hofgastein is a relatively quiet resort with cobbled streets and a relaxed approach to après ski. The skiing and boarding is superb - you need almost never take the same piste twice in a week, and if you head off-piste with a guide the area almost doubles again!
Friendly with a nice atmosphere. There are a variety of bars, cafés and discos. Try: • Almstadl • Casino Bar • Salute • Piccolo
· FREE outdoor ice rink planned for 08/09 (local charge for skate hire) · Spa centres (see 'Ski & Spa' box) · Curling · Tobogganing · Sleigh rides · Ice climbing · Snow shoe walking · Floodlit cross country skiing track
A superb choice of restaurants catering for all tastes and pockets · 3-course dinner from €20-25.
· Stylish shops and boutiques · Banks · Many lovely winter walks · Excursions to Salzburg.
What better way to soothe those tired muscles than by relaxing in a warm thermal pool while looking up at the snow covered mountains? Bad Hofgastein is famous for the thermal waters hidden within the mountains - people have been attracted here to bathe in these 'healing' waters for hundreds of years. The current 'spa' centre was renovated in 2004 and now offers state-of-the-art leisure facilities.
'Alpen Therme'
The 'Alpen Therme' consists of 6 worlds of spa heaven so there is something for everyone: spa beauty treatments, indoor and outdoor thermal pools, saunas and steam rooms, relaxation rooms, a separate 'Family World' and much, much more.

The gentle nursery slopes at Angertal provide an ideal introduction for beginners staying in Bad Hofgastein. From the nursery slopes beginners can progress on to blue runs on the Schlossalm or Stubnerkogel.
This is ski-your-heart-out country! Bad Hofgastein offers a wide variety of red and blue runs, linked together with nearby Bad Gastein to make one large area. The Gastein valley has a further 3 ski areas, offering total of 250kms of well groomed, often quiet, pistes. Buses and trains link the areas, and are covered by your lift pass.
There are also some testing runs on the Stubnerkogel and a couple of nice blacks on the Graukogel. The off-piste can be fantastic too - why not hire a guide and head to the spectacular off-piste route from Kreuzkogel to Heilstollen, or sign up for an off-piste safari or touring day with the ski school.
This resort forms part of one of Austria's largest rideable areas with over 100 miles of piste. For freestylers there is a well maintained half-pipe and snowboard park to keep you happy and plenty of natural hits around.
